Abstract
A large part of the political elite of the Polish state, which regained its independence in 1918, had already been politically active under the rule of the partitioning powers before the First World War. They were shaped by the different conditions that existed for Poles in the German Empire, the Habsburg Monarchy and the Tsarist Empire.
Using the example of the Second Polish Republic, the contributors examine the question of how former political borders continue to have an effect as phantom borders after they have disappeared and continue to shape the political situation.
