Abstract

Human beings are social animalsSocial animal; our interactions with other people are essential to our wellbeing. These interactions can be of various kinds: pleasant or nasty, beneficial or harmful, exciting or dull, interesting or boring, and so forth. Such interactions between the agent and others underlie the generation of positive or negativeNegative emotionemotionsEmotion. PolitenessPoliteness is a behavioral tool for smoothing these interactions and making them more pleasant. Is this tool also necessary in close relationships, such as romantic ones, where the interactions are typically more direct, sincere, and spontaneous? The answer is complex, since there are various types ofTypes of politenesspolitenessPoliteness and different circumstances in which we exercise them.
