BOTH DURING HIS LIFE and after, Lev Tolstoy was often labeled a mystic. Tolstoy himself rejected this label and said so openly on several occasions. In his treatiseThe Kingdom of God Is within You(1890–93), Tolstoy recalls with disdain and sarcasm how certain “foreign critics” had called him a “Russian mystic” (28:37).
