Abstract
The Supreme Muslim Council of Palestine was a body unique in the history of those Muslim countries administered by Colonial and Mandatory governments. The Council was founded by the British who wished to delegate responsibility for the administration of religious affairs to the Palestinian Muslims themselves. Its uniqueness stemmed from the specific political situation in Palestine: the British commitment to establish a Jewish National Home coupled with their wish at the same time to appease the opposition of the Palestinian Arabs.
