Abstract
This paper applies several of Marshall McLuhan’s basic concepts to clinical supervision. It advances three arguments: (1) that supervision is a medium, (2) that the medium of supervision is its message, (3) that “cool supervision, ” with low information content, is most effective. The cool supervisory environment, independent of the content of supervisory conferences, stimulates reflection, contemplation, and discovery.
