Abstract

From the experience accumulated in the Center for Curriculum Planning at the University of Haifa, the following conclusions were reached with respect to textbooks on geography: 1) The program approved by the Ministry of Education contained a great number of topics and therefore had to be sifted in order to permit concentration on those that were and would best develop geographic skills. 2) It was necessary to define in advance the geographic principles that were to be taught at each stage. This would be best achieved by demonstrating several alternatives for each principle. 3) The most desireable methodological approach to a geography textbook is to have it structured so as to contain a combination of text, illustrations and exercises. 4) The scientific material should be presented in the most favorable light in order to allow the development of geographical thinking and skills. 5) The curriculum should be made more flexible.
