The Montfort Castle Project (MCP) was established in 2006 with the aim of carrying out research on the castle and in order to plan and instigate conservation, restoration and site development of the castle and its surroundings. The project is sponsored by the Zinman Institute of Archaeology at the University of Haifa and the Society for the Study of the Crusades and the Latin East (SSCLE). The first four years were devoted to surveys including mapping, photographic studies and examination of the physical condition of the architectural remains.1 In the summer of 2011, the first season of archaeological excavations took place; two additional seasons followed in 2012, and a three more seasons up to 2015. Fieldwork has been carried out by students and volunteers under the direction of Prof. Adrian Boas, assisted by Dr. Rabei Khamisy and Dr. Rafael Lewis.
