Abstract
After the establishment of Israel, US Jews in general and the Zionists in particular were forced to address the inbuilt contradiction between their recognition of Israel’s independence and its importance to world Jewry, and their desire to continue to play a major role in shaping the Jewish world and indeed Israel itself.
