Abstract
The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of the relationship between the field instructor and the student on the fieldwork grade as compared with the effect of measures of student ability. The study population included all third year students participating in field studies in a School of Social Work in an Israeli university. Regression analysis revealed that the relationship variable accounted for more of the variance in the students’ fieldwork grade than did the ability variable. After discussion of alternate grading approaches, the pass/fail approach is supported.
