THE FORMATION OF THE "HEBREW SEA" IN PRE-STATE ISRAEL

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

This article explores the integration of the "Hebrew Sea" into the Zionist geography of national revival in the pre-state period of Zionist history. The main argument is that the formation of the "Hebrew Sea" in pre-state Israel was at the convergence of popular needs, commercial interests, geopolitical concerns and strategic considerations. Either in the sphere of popular culture or as a Zionist challenge and a national imperative, the "Hebrew Sea" increasingly became an extension of the Hebrew homeland under construction in the Jewish Settlement in Palestine. We transformed sand into a city And shall also make the sea a homeland (Shimshon Meltzer, "Tel Aviv's Seashore", 1936, quoted in Lutsky 17)
