Abstract
The paper examines the architectural impact of material deterioration on historic buildings. It is aimed at providing an approach useful for determination of the conservation strategy and techniques, and also of the maintenance mode. Selected case studies on stone monuments in the Mediterranean basin, mainly in Israel - in areas with different levels of natural and industrial pollution and at different proximity to the sea (sea salts) are discussed. The correlation is examined between factors specific to the monument versus its environment. The building material in question is limestone and calcareous sandstone. Emphasis is on the exterior. Keywords: Architectural impact, material deterioration, limestone, calcareous sandstone
