Abstract
BITNET is a US interuniversity telecommunications system which started operations in 1981. It was followed by the Canadian NORTHNET (1983) and the European EARN (1984). They permit interactive mailing of messages, data and texts. The diffusion of these systems is extremely fast along both time and space, and will soon cover most research-based universities.
