Abstract
Suicide has been a subject of multi-disciplinary research for more than a century. The first comprehensive history of suicide in the classical world, based on a doctoral dissertation, was published in 1888.¹ By that time, the last two decades of the nineteenth century, the subject had come much into vogue. Concomitantly, perhaps under the impact of again reaching a fin de siècle, the last two decades of the twentieth century have again witnessed a remarkable increase in attention among scholars, historians and classicists included.²
