Requirements Engineering for Integrating Quantum Key Distribution with Blockchain Systems

Abstract

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) represents an advanced cryptographic security technology which uses principles of quantum mechanics to confront the threat of quantum computing. Cryptographic protocols such as elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) alongside RSA serve as present blockchain key exchange methods yet they remain exposed to possible quantum computing damage. This research method employs grounded theory based on interviews with twenty blockchain engineers and cybersecurity experts to explore QKD and blockchain integration along with basic requirements needed to build a quantum-resistant blockchain framework. Systematic analysis of security expert opinions showed that achieving integration success depends on operational resilience, security infrastructure development and governance mechanism development. A complete framework to integrate QKD into blockchain key exchange protocols was created from these identified dimensions which enables smooth transition between hybrid cryptographic operations and Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) protocols. The research fills an essential theoretical-to-practical divide for quantum cryptography by creating implementation methods that support secure decentralized blockchain networks.
