Abstract

Described the presence of Mus "spretoides" in Israel by morphometric and biochemical analyses. 792 specimens of Mus are morphologically studied. These animaIs were live-trapped or came from museums or owl pellets from al! over Israel. By then, distributions of bath Mus "spretoides" and Mus musculus domesticus were established: Mus "spretoides" ranges in stricciy Mediterranean environments while Mus musculus domesticus occurs also in semi-arid environments. PartIr competitive exclusions of Mus "spretoides" from human dwellings and of Mus musculus domesticus from natural environments appear in sympatric area. The typical Mediterranean range and ecology of Mus "spretoides" allows to demonstrate a clear vicariance around the Mediterranean Sea between this eastern species and Mus spretus which occurs in the western part of the Mediterranean Basin.
