Abstract
Duodenal diverticula are not uncommon, but their perforation is a very rare complication. The correct diagnosis is seldom made preoperatively and is also easily missed at laparotomy. A 72-year-old patient was operated on for right-sided abdominal pain tentatively diagnosed as acute cholecystitis. A retroperitoneal abscess was found, caused by a perforated diverticulum arising from the second portion of the duodenum. The diverticulum was excised and its base was closed over a Depetzer tube serving as a duodenostomy. Tube gastrostomy for drainage of the stomach, feeding jejunostomy and drainage of the abscess area were also performed.
