Abstract
Investigated the hypothesis that dietary compliance among chronic hemodialysis patients is related to their engagement in social, vocational, and recreational activities and to marital adjustment of their spouses. It is noted tht hemodialysis often elicits stresses such as depression, discord, anxiety, and feelings of dependency. 68 chronic hemodialysis patients and their spouses were studied. Lower levels of interdialysis fluid weight gain, indicating dietary compliance, were found to be significantly related to higher spouse marital adjustment scores. A significant canonical correlation also occurred between the level of dietary compliance and the variables of marital adjustment and engagement in life activities.
