Parasocial Relationships and Breakups

Abstract

The term parasocial relationship generally refers to a one-sided relationship that a media consumer forms with a media figure. The termination of this relationship is called a parasocial breakup. This entry includes a definition of this construct and an outline of its research history. It also covers the common measurement of this construct and the various theories used to account for it, an outline of the similarities and differences between parasocial relationships and other similar concepts, and the similarity of parasocial relationships and breakups with real-life interpersonal relationships. The entry also expands on the various antecedents and consequences of parasocial relationships and on their changing nature following advancements in new media.
