Abstract
This paper reviews the existing information on the distribution, taxonomy, habitat, behaviour, movement, reproductive biology, growth, intra- and interspecific interactions, and exploitation of the Mediterranean slipper lobster, Scyllarides latus (Crustacea: Decapoda). Where appropriate, gaps in all aspects of the natural history of this overfished species are pointed out. Postlarval life history, adult biology in deeper waters, and fisheries statistics are the major areas where research efforts should now be directed. Research in these areas may also lead to improved protection and management of this commercially and ecologically important species.
