Natural Applications of Applied Behavioral Analysis for Children with Autism

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

There is a debate regarding the applicability of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) based methods for children with autism. This paper describes the definition of ABA principles, components and outcomes for children with autism. In addition, it outlines the specific learning characteristics of children with autism which justify the need for a natural behavioral intervention that promotes generalization. The paper proceeds to present the debate regarding ABA outlining the benefits and risks of Discrete Trial Training (DTT). Following is a review of selected techniques and methods which are considered natural applications of ABA, including Incidental Teaching and Functional Communication Training (FCT). Finally the clinical implications and relevance of these methods for occupational therapy theory and practice are discussed.
