Abstract
The book reviewed in this paper belongs to the framework of the discourse-linguistic approach. It differentiates methodologically between narrative and direct discourse prose, and examines the presence and pragmatic function of the various types of clauses for each of these prose types. The author devotes much attention to the quantity and ratio of each clause type in the texts examined. He seeks to demonstrate that the use of verbal clauses possessing various suffix- and prefix-conjugation verbal forms, and of participial, verbless, and incomplete clauses is consistent, determined by the typology of either narrative or direct discourse, and in the case of direct discourse, by its subtypes.
