Naḥal Zippori 3 (Tel Mitzpe Zevulun North) - נחל ציפורי 3 (תל מצפה זבולון צפון): A Proto-historic Site in the Lower Galilee, Israel

Following road construction and development in the past decades, the Lower Galilee region has been the focus of large-scale excavations. In 2011 a rescue excavation was carried out in the alluvial lands north of Tel Mitzpe Zevulun (Naḥal Zippori 3). The excavation revealed remains of proto-historic settlements dated to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B, Pottery Neolithic, Chalcolithic, and Early Bronze Age periods. Remnants of domestic buildings, installations, and rich archaeological assemblages were documented in all layers except for the Chalcolithic period. The repetitive occupations of the Tel Mitzpe Zevulun North plains, attest that this specific geographic spot was a favored location for agricultural settlements during the Neolithic period and the Early Bronze Age. Similar sequential patterns of occupation at neighboring sites, such as Yiftaḥ’el and ‘En Zippori, highlight the significance of the Naḥal Zippori basin in the development and formation of early farming communities. The relative density of proto-historic villages around the stream of Naḥal Zippori and its alluvial lands, as well as other perennial streams in northern Israel (i.e., Naḥal Ara, Naḥal Ḥarod), provided the required infrastructure for the establishment of early urban centers in the Early Bronze II. בעשורים האחרונים נערכו באזור הגליל התחתון חפירות הצלה נרחבות בעקבות עבודות פיתוח וסלילת כבישים. בשנת 2011 נערכה חפירת הצלה באדמות עמק ציפורי מצפון לתל מצפה זבולון, באתר נחל ציפורי 3. החפירה חשפה שרידי יישובים פרוטו־היסטוריים מהתקופות הניאוליתית הקדם־קרמית ב', הניאוליתית הקרמית, הכלקוליתית והברונזה הקדומה. שרידי מבנים, מתקנים ומכלולים ארכיאולוגיים עשירים תועדו בכל השכבות, למעט בזיקה לתקופה הכלקוליתית. ההתיישבות החוזרת ונשנית למרגלות תל מצפה זבולון בתקופות הפרוטו־היסטוריות מעידה כי אזור זה היה מקום מועדף להתיישבות חקלאית. רצפי התיישבות דומים שזוהו באתרים שכנים, כגון יפתחאל ועין ציפורי, מדגישים את חשיבותו של אגן נחל ציפורי להיווצרותן של הקהילות החקלאיות הקדומות באזורנו. הצפיפות היחסית של כפרים פרוטו־היסטוריים בעמק נחל ציפורי, כמו גם בנחלים איתנים אחרים בצפון ישראל (למשל נחל ערה ונחל חרוד), היוותה את התשתית התרבותית־כלכלית הנדרשת להקמתם של המרכזים העירוניים הקדומים בתקופת הברונזה הקדומ II. أجريت في العقود الأخيرة، حفريات إنقاذ واسعة النطاق في الجليل الأسفل في اعقاب أعمال تطوير واسعة النطاق. وفي عام 2011 ، نفذت حفريات إنقاذ في أراضي وادي صفوريه الواقعة شمال تل المشيرفه. وكشفت الحفريات في موقع وادي صفوريه 3 على بقايا استيطان أرخت الى العصور الحجرية الحديثة وحتى العهد البرونزي المبكر. وقد تم توثيق بقايا لمباني ومرافق والمخلفات أثرية غنية في معظم الطبقات عدا مخلفات العصر النحاسي. يشير الاستيطان المتكرر خلال عصور ما قبل التاريخ شمال تل المشيرفه إلى أن هذه المنطقة كانت موقعا مفضلاً للاستيطان الزراعي. ويشابه التسلسل الاستيطاني في هذا الموقع تسلسلات مماثلة في المواقع اثرية قريبة، مثل موقع خلة الخالدية (يفتاخيل) وعين صفورية التي أقيمت على طول حوض نهر صفوريه حيث شكل حوض هذا النهر ظهيرا زراعيا مهما لتلك المستوطنات الزراعية القديمة. وكانت تلك المستوطنات البدائية في وادي صفوريه النواة القديمة لإنشاء مراكز حضرية واقتصادية، لاحقا خلال العصر البرونزي القديم كتلك التي اكتشفت على طول وادي عاره ووادي حارود شمال البلاد.
