Abstract

On its creation, Israel-a State founded on memory -presented a virtually unanimous front to the world as it shaped a glorious narrative that broke entirely with traditional Jewish "victimology". The new "Sabra" is very different to the "passive Jex" of the Shoah. But successive wars have forged a new epic and new memories. The Israeli press analysed in this article reflects these changes. Israeli identity is becoming a combination of memories branded by the Shoah and the present-day experience of killing in the war against the Arabs.
