Abstract
The differential system y double prime plus lambda p(x)y equals 0, y( plus or minus 1) equals 0 is considered. Monotonicity of the first eigenvalue and the monotonicity of the sum of the reciprocals of eigenvalues are established under a symmetrization method applied to p(x).
