Abstract

Responsiveness is ubiquitous to human interaction and is an essential aspect of positive and satisfying relationships. Nonresponsive environments are experienced as deleterious to our well-being. This book sees responsiveness as integral to all theoretical approaches with therapists continually adapting and adjusting to tailor their treatments to meet their clients' needs and characteristics. It examines the concept of responsiveness in psychotherapy drawing on multiple perspectives and the wisdom of numerous research clinicians. The book draws on the rich and diverse talent of the contributors to clarify its meaning, refine the understanding of the concept, and identifies some of the signals to which therapists attend when they are being responsive to inform theory, research, training, and practice. This concluding chapter thus synthesizes material from all the chapters to provide a more elaborate map of the interpersonal terrain and a cohesive set of guidelines to inform theory, research, practice, and training.
