Abstract
In this paper we present the evidence for a Mamluk-period presence in the Golan. We review the relevant historical and archaeological data, including excavations, shovel tests, surveys, inscriptions and numis- matic data. Over 300 Mamluk-period sites are defined typologically. The size of the sites as well as the beginning and abandonment dates are discussed. The excavations and shovel tests show that the Mam- luk-period presence was significantly found only in a small portion of the former Roman-Byzantine- period villages and in many cases there was reuse of Roman-Byzantine-period structures. Methodological challenges especially in the precise dating of the pottery are also noted.
