Abstract
This article focuses on five kinds of effects of technology on the mind of the individual: (a) the creation of metaphors, (b) the stimulation of new distinctions, (c) the kind of partnership with technology. (d) the cultivation of skills, and (e) the internalization of technological tools and modes of representation. The variety of effects elaborated here differ along three dimensions: the source of the effect, the role of the individual in producing the effect and the degree of the effect dependence on content. The variations of the different effects along these three dimensions might bring to new metaphors through indirect partnership with technology, to the discovery of new cognitive distinctions thanks to a direct and mindful use of technology and to the creation of new intellectual associations and re-organizations by the use of technological tools that allow to perform not only the same tasks more efficently but also to perform new tasks and new cognitive operations. The implications of judging the developmental impact of technology will be disscussed.
