Abstract
Prof. Zevi (Hirsch) Perez Chajes – born 1876 in Brody, Galicia; died in 1927 in Vienna – became well known as Chief Rabbi in Vienna, where he served from 1918 till his death. He was a person of liberal views, widely respected as a scholar and, as an ardent Zionist, he helped promoting the Jewish national ideas. Prof. Chajes was also president of the Austrian Jewish League of Nations Society from 1923, when he organized it, till his death. His grand-grandfather had lived for 15 years as a banker in Florence before settling in Brody. As a Talmud scholar, Prof. Zevi (Hirsch)
