Islam on the Defensive: The Supreme Muslim Council's Role in Mandatory Palestine

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The Supreme Muslim Council, from its gradual consolidation in the early 1920s until the dismissal and escape of Hajj Amin al-Husaini as its powerful President in 1937, became the principal standard-bearer of the Islamic struggle against the "Jewish National Home" and against the "Christian Mandatory"; in this paper it is attempted to define more precisely the role which the Supreme Muslim Council played in the Framework of Palestinian Islam and the extent to which it used, or had an impact upon, Islamic institutions and symbols.
