by Poizner, Klima & Bellugi (1990). Having had only limited exposure to sign language (a classroom presentation during MA studies in Jerusalem, by fellow student Wendy Sandler), this book fired her intellectual curiosity, and Irit began to learn American Sign Language. When the family was ready to return to Israel, Irit wrote a letter to Wendy, then a junior lecturer and researcher associated with the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Haifa, asking about the possibility of a research assistant position. Wendy remembered Irit well from the MA course they had taken together more than a decade earlier, especially because Irit had asked Wendy an interesting question about sign language that she could not answer (and still can’t!). Irit’s letter prompted Wendy to write her very first grant proposal. The proposal was funded by the Israel Science Foundation, and the first-ever project on the linguistics of Israeli Sign Language (ISL) was launched in 1992.
