Genetic regulation of mitosis in interspecies hybrids of Drosophila. I. Maternal effect on chromosome segregation and elimination (Russian)

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

When crossing Drosophila virilis females to D.littoralis males, elimination of the 6th chromosome of D.littoralis (microchromosome) was often observed. The absence of this chromosome was revealed when studying F1 hybrids, due to the mosaic expression of the recessive gene 'gl', located in the 6th chromosome of D.virilis. In the reciprocal cross the elimination of the 6th chromosome of D.littoralis had no place. Genetic analysis led to the conclusion that the observed maternal effect on mitosis is under the control of recessive genes which are located in the 2nd and 4th chromosomes of D.virilis. The genes of mitosis, located in the 2nd chromosome, differ from those located in the 4th chromosome both in the temperature sensitivity and in the time and/or the mechanism controlling the mitotic behavior of chromosomes.
