Evaluating exercises for learning vocabulary

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter discusses three theoretical frameworks - Involvement Load Hypothesis technique Feature Analysis, and TOPRA (Type of Processing - Resource Allocation) model - and summarize some empirical studies with new words that compare different types of exercises that sought support for these theories. Several guiding principles are suggested for the evaluation of exercises that aim to expand and consolidate basic work knowledge. These are “beyond the basics”, “a glimpse of a system”, “differential treatment”, and “activation of receptive knowledge”.
