European imperialism and the development of modern palestine: Was zionism a form of colonialism?

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Considering the predominance of Marxism in the criticism of European imperialism and colonialism, it is no wonder that Marxist and neo-Marxist politicians, ideologists and scholars were the main critics of European involvement in Palestine during the 19th and 20th centuries. Due to different political and ideological reasons, Marxist criticism concentrated on scrutinising Zionism as a form of colonialism and the main collaborator of Western imperialism in Palestine, rather than on the actions of imperial powers, their emissaries and collaborators among the indigenous population. This paper attempts to reconsider the question of Zionism as a form of colonialism elaborating on works that criticise Marxism and to accentuate the multiple variants and ramifications of European colonialism.
