Abstract
This research report has a dual purpose. First, he outlines the main North American approaches to organizational and professional commitment and how these two constructs relate to one another. It is assumed that both forms of commitment show parallels in their conceptual development and that the conceptualization and operationalization of organizational commitment have a major impact on approaches to professional commitment. The second section discusses both constructs against the background of an internationally comparative research approach and raises research questions that arise from the transfer of North American commitment research to the European context. In particular, it is assumed that there are deviations for job-related labor markets and training systems, as is the case in Switzerland, Austria and Germany, for example. In such contexts, so the theory goes, the North American commitment concepts, which are primarily oriented towards organization, could possibly be less explanatory. It can be assumed that the characteristics and effects of commitment on the work attitude of employees vary with the respective training system. Finally, the research report gives an outlook on possible future research fields and priorities in this area. the North American concepts of commitment, which are primarily oriented towards the organization, could possibly be less explanatory.
