Abstract

This paper examines the writing of the contemporary French novel. The last decades have witnessed the emergence of new forms of writing with renewed attention to the aesthetic strategies anchored in reality. These new forms, although they might sometimes seem to be close to postmodern texts, are now very far from the experimental or critical dimension of the type of writing carried out previous to the postmodern era. These forms of the "contemporary extreme" have no longer much in common with contradiction or discontinuity, randomness or semantic dispersion. On the contrary, they rather constitute stories well-grounded in reality. In sum, this is a New Realism. What are its characteristics? How is it expressed in today's stories? How does it differ from the 19th century realism?
