    Abstract

Investigated the relationships among maternal employment, paternal involvement with the child, and the child's mental health, using 84 2-parent Israeli families who were referred to a mental health clinic. The children were aged 6–18 yrs; 38 of the mothers were housewives and the remaining 46 mothers were employed. Ss were questioned about their relationships within the family and the working situation of the mother. The severity of problems of the referred child was rated by a psychotherapist and teachers. A 5-point rating scale was used for all variables. No difference was found in ratings of the severity of problems of children of working and nonworking mothers. Significant negative correlations were found between ratings of the severity of the child's problems and the income of the mother, and between ratings of the severity of the child's problems and satisfaction of the mother. The reported relationship of the father to his child was negatively correlated with ratings of the severity of the child's problems, with similar correlations from the mother's side. The importance of the family in the treatment of the referred child is discussed.
