Abstract

This article examines the role of media on the local community from three perspectives. One approach examines how different media outlets affect the identification and participation of residents in the local community. The second examines the characteristics of online communities and its main features. The third approach looks at the emerging role of online geographically based communities on the social integration of residents in the local community. Directions for future research are provided.
