Abstract

Starting from the premise that mathematical creativity and giftedness are of a dynamic nature, this chapter chooses the “mathematical promise” as the underlying construct of the education for mathematical creativity and the promotion of mathematical talent. Chapters in the volume are synthesized here according to their relationship with the components of mathematical promise. The present chapter discusses a gap between research and theory in the field of mathematics education and of creativity and giftedness. Moreover, it points out that systematic empirical research on mathematical creativity and giftedness is underrepresented in mathematics education. Several directions for empirical research are suggested to bridge the gap.
