    Abstract

The following paper investigates a possible link between academic difficulties and early literacy deprivation among the immigrant Ethiopian population in Israel. An analysis of five interviews with Pre-Academic students at Haifa University suggests that a deprived literacy background can have lasting effects long after the person becomes literate and multilingual. This finding underscores the importance of literacy exposure in early childhood and first language (LI) maintenance for language minority students.
