Abstract
A method of preparing fluorescently-labeled natural sediment particles for sediment transport determinations is described. Sediments can be taken from appropriate sites (river bed, lake bottom) tagged with various colored stains which can be adjusted to last for specified times varying from 10 days to 6-7 months. The tagged segments are replaced at their original sites and subsequently they can be traced "downstream". These tracers are ecologically harmless, have the same hydrodynamic properties as the original sediment particles, and can be detected with high sensitivity. For quantitative measurements we have developed three methods based on (1) visual scanning and counting, (2) excitation emission fluorescence spectroscopy, and (3) optical density of extracts in organic solutions. We give an example showing the application of two differently colored tracers in studying the patterns of bedload transport from the Jordan River into Lake Kinneret and particulate longshore transport along the eastern lake coast.
