A drop-weight apparatus for observing the behavior of thin liquid layers, dynamically loaded in tension and compression

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

An apparatus was designed which enables the loading in tension and in compression of thin liquid layers while observing the events occurring in the liquid during loading. The apparatus is part of a transparent anvils drop-weight machine, which enables loading at strain rates ∼104 s -1 and high-speed photography at up to 2×105 frames per second. The events observed include cavity formation and growth followed by cavity collapse, jetting, and secondary cavitation.
