Abstract
At the center of this essay are two poems by contemporary American poets who are also tenured professors of literature. The poems discussed refer to a class of theirs in that capacity. The essay presents the “class” as both an intimate space, and a space whose boundaries exceed the class itself. The poems and the classes redefine teacher-student relationships, poet-reader relationship, and the relationship between past and present. Reading a literary text in class, together, turns out to be a formative experience.
