Abstract
Occupational therapists have evaluated the child's response to tactile stimulation. However, data on normal tactile sensitivity has been lacking. In this study an informant report questionnaire was used to assess tactile sensitivity. Data was collected from mothers of children ages 1½ (n=52) and 2½ (n=53) years old. A combination of a longitudinal and cross-sectional design was used, to enhance the results of the study. Distinctive age-related profiles emerged from the analysis of data. The profiles appear similar to the characteristic pattern of cephlo-caudal development and adaptation to the environment. The results imply that the tactile sensitivity of the child continues to develop after birth.
