Abstract

Shallow bathymetry mapping by means of remote sensing methods has been in use since 1978. Most models calibrate radiation reflected to sensors along with measured depth data, thus enabling the extraction of suitable algorithms. The present model uses one, two, or several radiation bands. The ensuing algorithm is activated on the study area based on its calibration. Two different calibrations were developed in this study. One, based on a global-statistical method (stepwise multi-regression), uses all six spectral bands of ETM+ sensor (onboard Landsat-7 satellite). The other, based on remote-sensing, uses only two spectral bands. The latter is methodically similar to previous works, but the actual band combination is unique. Both algorithms were applied in two implementation areas for producing calculated depth maps. Accuracy levels resemble those of previous works. The effectively mapped depths range from 0 to 8 meter. As a byproduct, areas of floating solids were observed at increased depths (25-85 meter), which may eventually prove significant finding regarding sand movements along the Israeli Mediterranean coast.
