Abstract
Background: Ultra-Orthodox women face the risk of developing eating disorders (ED) as they become more exposed to Western norms. Most are treated by Israeli psychotherapists, who likely share different perspectives about the illness, treatment, and recovery. Ultra-Orthodox psychotherapists might face conflicts as they strive to be loyal to their patients and community.Aims: To highlight the complexities of treating young ultra-Orthodox women with ED.Methods: The theoretical background and main dilemmas related to the development of ED in young ultra-Orthodox women are presented and illustrated by four case studies.Main findings: The main difficulties that these young women face are related to high expectations to fulfill the role of a “perfect woman” (Eshet Chayil) as well as to pressure to marry young, find a good “match,” and questions of faith, which are illustrated in the case presentations. In intercultural therapeutic encounters, dilemmas arose in relation to different value systems. Conclusions and implications for practice: Ultra-Orthodox and secular psychotherapists must be knowledgeable in Judaism and psychology and use culturally sensitive approaches for good outcomes. Understanding the main dilemmas faced by these young women, as well as the need for the approval of the patient, her family, and community are critical. These conclusions are relevant to any treatment that requires cultural sensitivity, especially in Israel.
