Abstract

The present study examined the linguistic productions of pre-school children with reference to the type of text that emerges from the use of different elicitation tools. Our aim was to examine how differences between these tools would be reflected in the texts produced by the children. The study relied on four different tasks: a personal experience story, a story based on a sequence of pictures, a story based on a picture book and a story based on an animated video. The study focused on the productions of 16 children, eight boys and eight girls, aged 5-6 years, with typical language development. Each child was asked to produce seven different texts, in response to the four tasks listed above. A total of 114 texts were produced and analyzed. Our main hypotheses were that texts produced by pre-school children will show variability in their structure and that the ability of these children to construct narrative texts will be directly influenced by the elicitation tools.Similarly to previous studies, the findings of the current study show that the narrative ability of pre-school children is sensitive to the nature of the task.A qualitative analysis of the texts provides evidence for structural variability indifferent texts produced by the same subject. The study contributes to clinical practice in that it shows how comparing between different elicitation tools can help clinicians to assess the narrative abilities of children participating in treatment.
