Abstract

Research on rehabilitation and gentrification processes has focused until recently on neighborhoods of city centers, showing that renovation usually follows a phase of ageing and physical and social deterioration. The rehabilitation process of neighborhoods in city centers, the urban phenomenon known as "back to the city", started in the 70's following the drive of sub-urbanization. The causes for renovation are mainly social and economic, and the middle-class residents are usually those who return and upgrade the worn out city centers. The study described in this paper deals with the rehabilitation and renovation processes taking place in the cores of Arab localities in Israel which are undergoing urbanization. The article sets out to examine the varying grades of intensity evident in the rehabilitation process, and to identify its underlying causes.
