Abstract
The Ma‘agan Mikhael B shipwreck is the remains of a 24 m-long lateen-rigged merchantman, dated to the 7th-8th centuries CE. The shipwreck is located about 70 m off the Mediterranean coast of Israel, at a maximum water depth of 3 m and below 1.5 m of sand, and has so far been excavated over the course of seven seasons. The Ma‘agan Mikhael B shipwreck is exceptional due to its state of preservation, and the unique fact that both the mast-step assembly and the hook-shaped masthead fitting have been recovered intact, as well as its cargo – a large ceramic assemblage including complete amphorae. The dating of this shipwreck makes it a prime source of information regarding various aspects of ship construction, seamanship and seafaring, regional economic activity, and daily life in the Levant during Late Antiquity.
